For the last five years, I have wanted to visit the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse in Lubec, Maine. It is located 90 minutes drive from Bangor and in mid August I decided to scratch this one from my photographic bucket list. Most photographers tend to visit the lighthouse during the sunrise. I decided to spend the day exploring the “Downeast” coast and take a sunset shot of the lighthouse. My plan almost succeeded. As I got to Lubec, a very thick fog bank moved into shore. I could barely see the lighthouse from the side of the road.
This is one of the photos I was able to capture. While it is not what I had originally envisioned, the image captures a scene common to New England coastal towns. I’m not ready to take this lighthouse from my bucket list yet. I consider this trip to be a scouting trip. Maybe later this summer I will be able to capture the photo I had envisioned yesterday. For now, I find comfort in knowing that I had a lot of fun exploring new parts of the Maine coast. Sometimes the journey is more satisfying than the destination.
